Same Boat Now

Same Boat Now is commissioned by the Cambridge Arts council for a complex which will contain King Open School, a public school named after Martin Luther King Jr. with a curriculum focusing on social justice. Inspired by one of Dr King’s famous quotes, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now”, the sculpture takes the form of a 14’ boat which slowly opens and closes, revealing its glowing interior at night. I conceived of its puzzle-like form as a metaphor for coexistence, where we have to figure out how to exist side-by-side through constant effort, struggle and problem solving.
